Gratitude – didn’t know much about the word or hadn’t given it a thought until me along with my wife (who was a friend then) came to learn under our Reiki Masters, Master Nalin K. Nirula and Master Renoo Nirula. This post is dedicated to the Masters for all they taught us and the journey that they put us on.
Let us rollback to the year 1997; I was struggling for some answers generally in life and was sitting with a headache in my office in India. I chanced upon a book called “The Joy of Reiki” and as soon as I read the back cover my headache just vanished into thin air. I started reading the book but more so I wanted to meet with the Masters who had written the book to see if this is the next direction I needed to take. So in the very next week I along with my dear friend went to see the Masters in a meeting that used to happen every week and it still takes place on every Thursday. I had a lot of apprehensions, questions, nervousness etc but when I entered the healing center as it is called now too I was at rest. I really did not have a lot of questions as I knew this is where I have been brought to as my next step in life. So the journey began and we did various levels of Reiki with the Masters and learnt under their grace. We even had opportunities to heal at the healing center. On the face of it, looked like that we were the healers but it was actually our healing which was taking place while working with others. We set out to explore other worlds in the year 2000. There have been more learning’s, explorations, ups and downs but the blessing and grace of the masters have always been there. It is a feeling, awareness, a presence that always is there and has guided us through everything. And we are Grateful for this to the Masters and for putting us on the path with Reiki and other things that followed. So this is how and where we were blessed with the “Attitude of Gratitude”.
What does Gratitude mean?
It could mean a lot of things for a lot of people but at the core I feel it is a feeling to be thankful, appreciative, gratefulness for the blessings in life. So just a simple feeling of appreciation and thanks, nothing really complex about it.
What does it do?
It has an immediate effect of changing or shifting your vibratory rate. I have tried it as an experiment that instead of judging a situation, a person, a circumstance just turning it around and rather repeating what am I grateful for in this situation, person or circumstance. And it shifts the perception, the attitude and the vibratory rate quickly. On David Hawkins scale of consciousness (Author of the book – Power Vs Force) Gratitude/ Appreciation calibrates at above 500. It might vary between 500 - 600 and it is a powerful vibration to be in. The Map of Consciousness is a scale of 1-1000 where anything, anyone, any idea that is, or has ever been, can be calibrated as to its level of truth or “consciousness” using Kinesiology.
Following is a snapshot of the Consciousness chart for your reference:
Putting it into practice is as easy as saying a simple THANKS, that is it!. It does wonders for us and we do see the results in our daily lives.
However it might also help to be a bit process oriented at times so that we get into a discipline of doing things, and then it eventually becomes a part of us. Some other ways that people practice it is, repeating all the things that they are grateful for, just before going to sleep or on getting up in the morning. I, at my end, just started the practice of listing down 5 things or more on a daily basis before I go off to sleep. I felt I needed to write it down specific to that day rather being generic about it. It is quite an eye opener when you consciously put your effort in it; you realize the beauty of so many things on a daily basis and all the things that you miss out on. The feeling that we generally do not pay any heed to it got stronger when we were playing a group game recently and one of my friends had to repeat 5 things he is grateful for. He could repeat only 4 and that too after taking some time to think about it.It seemed a simple case of not being able to put your thoughts in words to express them but still it does raise questions as to why is it such a difficult thing to do. And this is not the first time I have seen someone in such a dilemma. I remember another friend some years back who was in a similar situation. This guy was practicing some healing oriented things and when we asked him to repeat ten things that he is grateful for he could not, he just kept skirting around the topic through jokes, humor etc but could not repeat those things. I was surprised as to why is it so difficult. Is it that we are not aware of things, or is it that we don’t acknowledge them; maybe taking things for granted at times or is it that we are just shy to repeat such things?
Whatever the reason might have been or is, there is always time to shift our perception and start practicing it. So I would encourage everyone to start practicing it and move towards a higher vibration. If everyone’s game for it we can all do the following experiment for next 30 days.
Start a Gratitude Journal
List and pen down 5 or more things on a daily basis specific for that day that you are grateful for (Specific to that day only. Other things which are generic like parents, food, housing etc should definitely be repeated but they will not be a part of the list that we are supposed to write down for the purposes of this exercise)
Notice; be aware of the changes that you feel are taking place in your feelings, thought, emotions and in other aspects of our daily lives. It would be a good idea to note these down too.
We can touch base after 30 days with the changes that you notice in your lives.
Another Way to put it into practice:
On a daily basis when you are in a situation which is not really to your liking, an instant way to shift it would be to find a thing which you are grateful for in that particular situation , it is like turning it around. Might not be easy but we can definitely start and see where we reach with this.
What does research say on this?
I am sure there will be many studies which we can find on gratitude and how it effects us. I will only quote the following text that I found on the internet since it is relevant to what we are planning to do here:
Two psychologists, Michael McCollough of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and Robert Emmons of the University of California at Davis, wrote an article about an experiment they conducted on gratitude and its impact on well-being. The study split several hundred people into three different groups and all of the participants were asked to keep daily diaries. The first group kept a diary of the events that occurred during the day without being told specifically to write about either good or bad things; the second group was told to record their unpleasant experiences; and the last group was instructed to make a daily list of things for which they were grateful. The results of the study indicated that daily gratitude exercises resulted in higher reported
levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, optimism, and energy. In addition, those in the gratitude group experienced less depression and stress, were more likely to help others, exercised more regularly, and made greater progress toward achieving personal goals.
